UNREGISTERED SCHOOLS
In Victoria, parents have the choice to enrol their children in a registered school, or to
register their child for homeschooling with the Victorian Registration and Qualifications
Authority (VRQA).
Homeschooling regulations permit learning outside of the home, however they do not permit
parents to outsource their responsibility to an unregistered school.
Recently, the VRQA has identified cases of children registered for homeschooling attending
unregistered schools. Unregistered schools may provide education in the learning areas
face-to-face at a residential or commercial premises or online.
Unregistered schools are illegal and may put children at risk. VRQA registration ensures a
school complies with the minimum standards, including the Child Safe Standards. It ensures
Victorian children receive a quality education from registered teachers, in environments that
are safe for children.
All schools in Victoria must be registered and the VRQA will not approve homeschooling
applications that do not align with the regulations.
